Bone Grafting Schererville IN
For patients with missing or severely decayed teeth, Crossroads Family Dental offers dental implants as a tooth replacement solution! Dental implants are the next best thing to your natural teeth. In recent years, Dental Implants have become the popular choice among patients because of their many advantages.
An implant is a titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jaw. After the healing process, the implant is attached to a prosthetic restoration and mimics the root component of a tooth. This means there must be a sufficient amount of bone to ensure the success of an implant.
Patients who have experienced bone deterioration may not be able to properly support a dental implant. Fortunately, the majority of these patients can undergo a bone graft procedure. A bone graft procedure will increase the quantity and quality of the bone before implant surgery.
Why is bone grafting necessary?
The powerful chewing action of your mouth puts an enormous amount of pressure on the bone. A weak bone will be unable to support an implant, and the surgery will likely fail. If your jawbone is not dense or rigid enough to support an implant, Dr. Nicholas Berns will suggest a bone graft. A bone graft will create a more solid foundation for the implant, and greatly increase your chances of success! In fact, we have seen a success rate of 98% for patients with a healthy amount of bone.
Dental Implants are so successful thanks to osseointegration. Osseointegration is the process responsible for the fusion of your implant and jawbone. It allows us to capitalize on your existing bone structure, and provide a restoration that can support the strongest bite forces. Without a sufficient amount of bone, proper osseointegration will fail to occur.
Bone Grafting Procedure
During a consultation visit, Dr. Nicholas Berns will make sure you are a suitable candidate for a bone graft. Once we have developed an appropriate treatment plan, we can schedule a date for the surgery.
There are four types of bone grafts: autografts, allografts, xenografts, and synthetic.
During the surgery, Dr. Nicholas Berns will take a section of bone graft material, and surgically implant it into the jawbone. After the surgery is complete, you will then have to wait for the new bone to grow. Over time, the bone graft material will be completely absorbed by new bone growth. It takes several months for the new bone to become stable and secure. Once Dr. Nicholas Berns has determined that your bone be healthy enough, we can proceed with the rest of the implant process. In some cases, it is possible to perform a minor graft at the same time as the implant surgery.
